AZERBAIJAN 2017-2018

A series of brutal and sweeping arrests of LGBTQ people in Baku, Azerbaijan, led to 83 people being imprisoned, 46 accused of false crimes, and dozens more being harassed, intimidated and subsequently released. Many who were imprisoned were beaten, tortured and forced to report their LGBTQ friends.

International pressure from human rights organisations led to the release of all prisoners on 2 October 2017, but the community is still in crisis and in desperate need of help. Many have been evicted, lack money for food or suffer from the psychological and physical consequences of the persecution.

With Civil Rights Defenders and their local partners, safe housing, psychological support and other forms of direct help are provided to those affected.
